Nearly 210,000 people in the United States turn to a rhinoplasty each year, making it the third most common cosmetic surgical procedure. While a nose job is often thought of as cosmetic, there are many reasons why people reshape their noses, including problems with function.

Here at The Nikolov Center for Plastic Surgery, top-rated surgeon Dr. Nicholas Nikolov and our team have extensive experience helping patients achieve their nose-shape and function goals.

In the following, we explore the many reasons why people opt for a nose job, what we can accomplish, and whether you’re a candidate.

Behind The Nose Job

As we mentioned, your nose takes center stage on your face, which means it has a huge impact on your appearance. Many of our patients are unhappy with their noses’ shape and feel they overshadow their other features. Or, there’s an asymmetry that they want to correct.

Outside of cosmetic reasons, people come to us to correct breathing or snoring problems created by a nose with a congenital disability or has been altered by an injury.

What We Can Accomplish With A Nose Job

Whether you want to make a change to the form or function of your nose, here’s a look at what we can accomplish during a rhinoplasty:

  • Increase or reduce the size of your nose for improved facial balance
  • Alter the shape of the tip of your nose
  • Reduce bumps or depressions along the bridge
  • Narrow the space between your nostrils
  • Correct nostril asymmetry
  • Change the angle between your nose and your upper lip
  • If you don’t see your concern on this list, give us a call to discuss your unique needs.

Are You A Candidate For A Nose Job?

This question is a tough one to answer as this type of surgery is personal, and your goals are your own. That said, we do offer some general rules of thumb when it comes to rhinoplasty, starting with age. If your child wants to change their nose’s shape, we need to wait until nasal development is finished, usually later in their teens.

We want you to be happy with your outcome, which means being realistic about this procedure. A nose job can dramatically affect your appearance, but we urge you not to view it as an answer to all of your cosmetic concerns.

Finally, you should be in good health for this type of procedure, which means that you don’t have any pre-existing conditions or lifestyle habits (smoking) that can make this type of elective surgery riskier.
